The Walworth County Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC) is set to launch the Walk With Ease program on Monday, September 8, at the Walworth Memorial Library. Developed by the Arthritis Foundation, this six-week walking initiative aims to help individuals with arthritis manage pain and establish consistent exercise routines.
Certified instructor Rebecca Way, MSW, APSW, will lead participants through sessions focused on stretching, pain management techniques, and building stamina. The program is designed to be adaptable so that each participant can tailor their exercise plan to fit personal goals.
“Research shows that walking is good for joints and helps improve heart, lung, and bone health,” said instructor Rebecca Way. “Walking can also help with weight management, which can reduce the risk for arthritis in the knee, heart disease, and diabetes. If you can be on your feet for 10 minutes without increased pain, you will most likely have success with Walk With Ease.”
Walk With Ease incorporates information from research and tested programs in exercise science and arthritis management. It has been updated by the Thurston Arthritis Research Center and the Institute on Aging of the University of North Carolina. According to these organizations, participants may see improvements in balance, strength, walking pace, as well as reductions in arthritis-related discomfort.
Sessions will take place every Monday from September 8 through October 13 between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m., at Walworth Memorial Library located at 525 Kenosha Street in Walworth. Pre-registration is required; there is a suggested contribution of $10 for participation. For more details or to register, contact Edie Africano at (262) 741-3309. Participants are advised to consult their physician before beginning any new exercise routine.
The ADRC offers resources for older adults and people with disabilities throughout Walworth County. The center provides evaluations of individual needs along with guidance on available support options.
