The Elkhorn Area School District (EASD) is working through its fiscal process, emphasizing its strong financial position due to years of fiscal responsibility. This allows for careful budget adjustments as they await final numbers from the state. The board has considered community feedback on maintaining neighborhood schools and the middle school concept. However, class size increases, potential reductions in transportation services, and a shorter school year are unavoidable.
The board's Spring Budget Retreat was held on April 30, 2025. During this meeting, the projected deficit was reviewed, now standing at -$2,121,169—an improvement from the original projection of -$3,488,885. Cost-saving measures discussed include reducing transportation costs by cutting two routes and shortening the 2025-2026 school year by five days.
Additionally, eligible programs will be converted from the general education fund to the community service fund. Staffing reductions will occur through natural attrition without filling positions after resignations or retirements. Administrative positions will be reduced by 10% over two years using natural attrition.
The proposed state budget could provide EASD with $3,056,800 in additional funding if passed as presented. While not expecting this outcome, some relief through increased school funding is anticipated.
As the academic year concludes, several events are scheduled including graduation ceremonies for different institutions and a Senior Stroll on May 30th in downtown Elkhorn.
Summer programming includes a Summer Academy starting June 16th with important dates for parents and students provided. Swim lessons follow the American Red Cross Learn to Swim Program and registration is available online.
The Summer Food Service Program offers free meals to children during Summer Academy at designated times and locations.
Elkhorn's Parks & Rec department hosts Sunset Camp featuring games and activities aligned with weekly themes alongside field trips and swimming sessions.
A Girls Confidence Bootcamp is scheduled for August offering various workshops aimed at building confidence among young girls aged 10 to 12.
Looking ahead to July 15th marks the opening of Annual Returning Student Registration for current EASD students. Host families are sought for international exchange students Luiza from Brazil and Armin from Germany who are eager to join local families for either half or full-year exchanges.
Finally, community members can explore more events via the Elkhorn Area Chamber of Commerce & Tourism Center as EASD prepares for another academic year beginning September 2nd.
