The annual MakerFest event is set to return for its sixth year on February 15, 2025, at Elkhorn Area High School. Previously known as the Elkhorn Mini MakerFaire, this gathering brings together individuals who are passionate about learning and sharing their skills. The event attracts a diverse group of participants, including engineers, artists, scientists, and crafters.

MakerFest was created by Eryca Card, an EAMS Science Teacher and recipient of the PLTW Outstanding Teaching Award, along with EAHS Librarian Rebecca Blom. Card's inspiration came from attending her first MakerFaire in Milwaukee. "Seeing the creativity and connections made at the event sparked a vision of possibilities," she stated. When Blom joined EAHS as the Library Media Specialist with a mandate to create a "maker space" for students, she collaborated with Card to establish MakerFest. According to Card, they envisioned an event where students could showcase their talents while connecting with community members and participants statewide and nationwide.

Initially held at a middle school venue, MakerFest quickly outgrew it and moved to the high school in its second year. Blom remarked that "the event was a hit immediately," providing families an opportunity to engage in fun and educational activities during Wisconsin's cold winter months. The festival now draws over 1,000 attendees annually, featuring around 100 makers and vendors who demonstrate their creative processes.

Gina Rand has served as the high school student project coordinator since MakerFest began. She collaborates with students on unique projects within EAHS's Maker Space (known as The Cube) and leads demonstrations during the festival each year. Mariann Hunter has been coordinating volunteers since the first event; current and former students regularly volunteer due to their enjoyment of the festivity. Blom acknowledged that "the Fest would not run the way it does without all of these people."

Card emphasized that "Makerfest has grown into a vibrant, community-focused celebration." It brings together sponsors, makers, food vendors, and participants to inspire students while showcasing talents and fostering lasting connections.

Admission is free through February 8 if tickets are reserved online alongside a donation for Lakeland Animal Shelter. Further details about participation opportunities can be found at elkhornschools.org/page/makerfest.
