High school music competitions offer significant benefits for students, according to experts and participants. These events provide young musicians with opportunities to challenge themselves, receive professional feedback, and prepare for future collegiate studies.
One key advantage of participating in music competitions is the learning that occurs during the preparation process. Competitors spend many hours practicing, which helps them develop diligence and discipline essential for a career in music. The process also allows students to improve their musical skills and reach performance standards that might not be emphasized otherwise. Chloe Meyer, a sophomore studying piano performance and pedagogy at Maranatha Baptist University (MBU), highlighted the sense of accomplishment that comes from mastering and performing music.
Another benefit is the constructive feedback received from professionals during adjudicated events. This feedback provides students with fresh ideas and insights that can enhance their musicianship. Meyer noted the value of having “a separate set of professional eyes on your music,” which often leads to improved accountability and progress in lessons.
Lastly, high school competitions help prepare students for collegiate-level study by giving them confidence through multiple performance experiences. These events teach performers how to manage performance anxiety and stress effectively, providing an edge when competing in college.
Meyer emphasized that participation in high school piano competitions can strengthen college applications by showcasing a list of performance experiences. She encourages young musicians to seek out challenging competition opportunities.
Maranatha Baptist University offers an annual High School Piano Scholarship Competition for advanced-level high school pianists. Scheduled for January 30, 2025, this event allows students to perform two contrasting pieces by memory for a chance to win cash awards and scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $3,500. Participants also receive detailed feedback and an overall rating based on their performances.
