Maranatha’s Music Department recently revealed the victors of the annual Piano Commencement Contest, a competition aimed at honing the presentation and performance skills of pianists. Dr. Diana Shapiro, an esteemed adjudicator, oversaw the event which saw Zane Richard emerge triumphant with his rendition of "Marche des Davidsbundler contre les Philistins" by Schumann. Richard, a Music Major specializing in Church Music and Piano Performance, secured the first-place position.
In a close second, Abigail Boorujy showcased her talent with a captivating performance of "Toccata" from Le Tombeau de Couperin by Ravel. Boorujy, a Music Major with concentrations in Piano Performance, Piano Pedagogy, and String Pedagogy, impressed the judges with her skillful interpretation.
Following the competition, Dr. Shapiro expressed her admiration for the young performers at Maranatha, stating, "I truly believe that the piano area at Maranatha keeps nurturing a wonderful array of young performers. It is a blessing to the community."
Dr. Shapiro, the adjudicator for the contest, is a highly accomplished musician holding a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Collaborative Piano from UW-Madison. With a rich background in music education and performance, she currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Piano at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.
The winners of the Piano Commencement Contest, along with the Instrumental and Voice Commencement Contest champions, will have the opportunity to record their pieces for professional videos. This recognition not only celebrates the talent and dedication of these young musicians but also highlights the commitment of Maranatha University to fostering excellence in music education.
