Requirements for Building Maintenance, Remodeling in DHMU District Outlined

Genbusiness010

Fort Atkinson City - WI recently issued the following announcement.

TO: Building owners in Downtown Historic Mixed-Use Zoning District (DHMU)

DATE: Oct. 25, 2021

FROM: City of Fort Atkinson Zoning Administrator

RE: Requirements for building maintenance and remodeling in the DHMU District

Dear Building owner,

In late 2020 the City of Fort Atkinson adopted a new Zoning code. This new code regulates land use in the City and has many new provisions to aid in the preservation of historic districts, such as the one your building is in, and ensure orderly and responsible growth in the future throughout the City.

One of the new provisions in the code helps protect and encourages the restoration of the historic nature of our City’s downtown. Maintenance, renovation, and construction of building exteriors in the DHMU District are now regulated by the City Plan Commission through the Special Area Design Review process. Projects ranging from repainting to residing, window and door replacement, and signage changes all require review and approval by the Plan Commission to ensure the nature of the historic district is preserved and/or improved.

The Fort Atkinson Chamber of Commerce has set up a Revitalization Loan process to aid building owners throughout the city in obtaining either interest free or low interest loans to assist with the renewal of building facades in the City. We have attached information to this notice regarding that program and encourage you to utilize those tools to help you in planning and completion of any contemplated changes to your building.

Please feel free to contact me at 920-563-7760 or bjuarez@fortatkinsonwi.net with any additional questions you may have regarding this notice and the codes involved. Thank you for being a valued member of our community ownership.

Sincerely,

Brian Juarez, Zoning Administrator
