Schurz Elementary School has been recognized as a 2023-24 Wisconsin School of Recognition by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. This award acknowledges the school's commitment to student growth and academic achievement.
The school was honored in the High Impact category, which considers criteria such as academic performance, measurable progress in student growth or graduation rates, and efforts to reduce achievement gaps among economically disadvantaged students.
"We are honored to be recognized by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction as a Wisconsin School of Recognition,” said Schurz Elementary School Principal Casey Rusch-Weiland. “This award is a testament to the incredible dedication of our students, staff, and families.”
“It reflects the daily commitment at Schurz to support a wide range of student needs while maintaining high expectations for all learners,” Rusch-Weiland added. “This recognition celebrates the strong partnerships and hard work that make our school community so special, and we are proud to represent our district in this achievement."
The Wisconsin Schools of Recognition program honors Title I schools that succeed in educating all students, particularly those experiencing poverty. The awards were paused during the COVID-19 pandemic but resumed for the 2023–24 school year.
Watertown Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Jarred Burke remarked on the Watertown community's high standards set by its new Strategic Plan focused on Inspired Academic Excellence and Student Growth. He stated, "Our administration and staff are working with families and students to make true and lasting progress in the pillar of academic achievement, and I congratulate our students and their teachers for their hard work and commitment to growth!"
