Emily Herbster, a Maranatha Baptist University (MBU) alumna, has been utilizing her education in music to contribute to the Southland Ministry team. Graduating in 2021 with a degree focusing on Piano Pedagogy and Early Childhood Music, alongside a TESOL minor, she participated in several university musical groups such as the Symphonic Band and Chamber Singers.
Her role within the Southland Ministry team involves traveling during the school year and working at Southland Christian Camp over the summer. During these travels, Emily engages in special music ministry, conducts children's programs, and assists churches with various needs. At camp, she serves as an administrative assistant.
Reflecting on her time at MBU, Emily credits her experiences with the pedagogy program and university tours for teaching her how to build relationships necessary for ministry work. These experiences also prepared her for virtual teaching roles post-graduation. COVID-19 restrictions during 2020 led Emily to develop skills for remote music instruction—a practice she continues today by offering virtual lessons to missionary children globally.
Emily expressed gratitude towards Janet Tschida from MBU’s pedagogy program for significantly impacting her teaching approach. She values Tschida's influence on both personal learning and private lesson instruction methods.
Offering advice to current students, Emily encourages them to seize all available musical opportunities during college as these experiences may not be readily available after graduation.
Now residing in Ringgold, Louisiana with her husband Micah Herbster, Emily enjoys various activities including making sourdough bread and exploring new places.
