Tax collection in the Town of Spring Prairie is currently ongoing, with officials providing updated information to residents regarding payment procedures and recent changes in postal regulations.
Tax payments can be made on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., as well as Wednesday evenings from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., unless otherwise stated. The Clerk or Deputy Clerk may not be able to process payments outside these posted hours due to the need for accurate record-keeping at the end of each day. “There is much more work that goes into keeping accurate records that needs to be completed prior to the end of each day, therefore coming outside of posted hours may result in not receipting your payment that day. This decision is left to the discretion of the Clerk and Deputy Clerk. Please understand that we want to ensure accurate and proper documentation and recording of all tax bill payments and this allows us to do just that. If the door is locked, we have stopped accepting payments and you are welcome to drop the payment in the box at the roadside.”
Residents who cannot make it during regular hours are encouraged either to use the roadside drop box or call 262-441-1721 for an appointment. In cases where area schools are closed, the office will also generally be closed; updates will be provided on the town website.
A significant change from USPS will take effect December 24, 2025, impacting how postmarks are interpreted for mailed tax payments. According to officials: “***Please be aware! The USPS has changed its rules on postmarks… As of December 24, 2025 the post office will implement a change affecting the way postmarks are managed and their meaning. Please follow the link for specific details, but in general: The rule clarifies that the date displayed on a machine-applied postmark represents the ‘date of the first automated processing operation’ performed at a processing facility, rather than the date the mail was dropped off.”
To avoid confusion about mailing dates for tax payments, residents are advised: “To ensure dates are accurate based on when you drop something off at the post office, specifically for post marks on tax payments be sure to ask the clerk to manually postmark the item!”
For further questions or concerns regarding tax collection or mailing procedures, residents can contact town officials by phone or email.
